FT School Council Frequently Asked Questions

We have received several questions regarding school council in response to the school council nomination forms included in your child’s September school package. The following provides a list of some frequently asked questions we believe will be helpful.

Q: Who can join school council?
A: Any parent with a child enrolled at Forest Trail.

Q: Do I need to write a paragraph about my qualifications in order to nominate myself to be a member of council?

A: No, you are not required to attach a paragraph to your nomination form. In the event there is a situation where multiple parties have been nominated for the executive members of the school council (Chair, Co-Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer) you may be asked to provide your reasons for nominating yourself and qualifications at that time. Generally, anyone nominating themselves to be a member of school council will be accepted.

Q: What is the time commitment to be a member of school council?

A: You will be required to attend the council meeting that occur every 5-6 weeks , on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  Any other time commitments will be based upon your choice of committees you wish to join and/or events you volunteer for.

Q; What events are organized and ran by the School Council?
A: Some of the events organized by School Council Include: Tasty Tuesdays, French Family Movie

Night, Minishop, Fun Fair Fantastique and Carnaval (in cooperation with School admin and staff).

Q; What committees are included as part of School Council?

A: Committees currently include: Constitution, Communications, PEP – Parents Engaging Parents, Pay it Forward, Fundraising, Safety & Well-Being, CFP - Canadian Parents for French. The opportunity for other committees are added as the needs of the council and the school are determined.

Q: Do I have to be a member of School Council to attend the meetings?

A: No, all parents are welcome to attend as a guest. Babysitting services are available free of charge by FT Grade 7 and 8 students in our school.

Q: What are the benefits of being a member of School Council?

A: School Council provides a great opportunity for you to learn about the details of the school programming, initiatives etc. You have the opportunity to get to know the school administration and staff and meet dedicated FT parent volunteers. Studies have been conducted supporting greater school success for students whose parents play an active volunteer role in their school.

Q: Should I consider joining school council if my child is only in Grade 2?

A: The earlier you join school council the more opportunity you have to learn from some of the parents of older students within the school and help shape the future for your child’s school experience.

Q: Where can I get more information about School Council?

A: Visit the school council website at https://for.hdsb.ca or send an call with any specific questions.
